There is a single verse in the Bible that tells us a great deal about the environment and how to treat it:
God said to them (male and female), “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Genesis 1:28)
Note that this passage doesn’t say that animals are equal to man. It says that man should have dominion over them. Yet the environmental movement tells us that we have no right to disrupt the lives of animals. Even worse, it essentially holds that mankind is a pox on the earth. Yet the Bible rejects this.
But are we morally justified in killing and eating animals for our own benefit? Actually, yes.
We have said that being born into this world is a great karmic opportunity. This isn’t just true for humans. This is also true for animals as well.
In this world, one level of life is often sacrificed to benefit another level. This is often necessary for the latter’s survival. It isn’t immoral. The level of life that is sacrificed acquires good karma as a result.
For example, there are environmentalists who want to prevent cattle from being slaughtered. But that is their purpose for being here. By “saving” them, you would be robbing them of a great karmic opportunity.
And if God wants us to have dominion over all living creatures, I suspect He also would want us to have dominion over the environment itself. I don’t believe He would have a problem with humanity using it to drill and mine for resources like coal, oil, and gas.
There is a lot of scaremongering going on in regard to global warming and climate change, but both of these theories test as false. Human activity actually has very little effect on the temperature or weather. When you consider how enormous the planet is and that mankind occupies only a very small percentage of it (seven-tenths of the planet is covered by water), the idea that human activity could cause the entire planet to heat up doesn’t really make sense. It would be like saying that a small portable heater was capable of heating up the Superdome.
But even if all this is wrong, even if climate change is a dangerous threat, the best solution to the problem is, believe it or not, economic growth. For the more wealth a country has, the better it will be able to handle any disaster or calamity.
Humanity would be much better off if all these professional world-savers would move on to something else. Stop trying to save the world. Given the human penchant for error, most people who try to save the world only make it worse. And if environmental disaster were to occur, it would actually be a great karmic opportunity for all the participants involved.
This is why it is better to surrender the fate of the world to God. We need to understand that the world is perfect as it is. Only then will we finally know peace.
