People who oppose Christianity will often say, “Who are you to judge? How can you possibly claim to know what is or isn’t true?”
This is what many people say to Christians who take a moral stand based on Christian principles, and it often puts us on the defensive. However, this is a disingenuous tactic because it allows our opponents to shut down any debate without having to defend their position.
A good reply to this would be the following:
“What I am saying is not just my opinion. It is the wisdom of the ages. It is the wisdom that formed the bedrock of Western civilization and led to its ascendancy and prosperity. The fact that this wisdom has endured through the ages indicates that it is of a very high level of truth. To casually throw this wisdom aside for expediency or short-term gain would be a terrible mistake. To the extent we have done this, it is why our society has been in decline.
And the idea that we cannot make judgments is simply ridiculous. We all make judgments. We do it all the time. It is impossible not to. You can claim that you don’t judge a person’s behavior. But when you do so, you are really saying that their behavior is okay. Therefore, the decision to not judge is actually in itself a judgment.”
