“Blessed will be one who seizes and dashes your children against the rock.” (Psalms 137:9)
This calibrates at 152. And it is my pick for the absolute worst Bible verse.
It was spoken by Jews living in Babylonian captivity. They were crying for vengeance against their oppressors, who were not good people. However, this still does not justify wishing for their babies to be dashed upon rocks.
Christians have defended this verse by arguing that it is a call for justice, not revenge. This argument is ludicrous. Wishing for the murder of innocent babies is clearly a call for revenge. Even worse, it is spoken in the first person, which gives the impression that we should take it as wisdom.
Jesus said that we should forgive our enemies, not seek revenge upon them. I firmly believe that the Bible should be congruent with the teachings of Jesus. Therefore, any Bible verse that directly contradicts what Jesus said should be removed. I’m sure some will accuse of me of wanting to desecrate the Bible, but I would argue that this verse desecrates the Bible. And, make no mistake, it has done enormous damage. This verse has caused people to deconstruct and leave the Christian faith.
There are so many demonic forces that seek to destroy Christianity. Why are we making their job easier? There is no reason for Christians to tolerate the parts of the Bible that are so obviously wrong.
The problem is that too many Christians believe that every single line of the Bible is “The Word of God” and therefore we have to live with every verse no matter how horrible they may be. Their only remedy is come up with a forced “context” for these verses, which is the equivalent of claiming that a black sky is really blue.
Here is an idea. If every line of the Bible is indeed “The Word of God,” then why was the canon of the Bible not decided until the late fourth century? After all, every book included in the Bible was written by the end of the first century. You would think God would have ordained that this perfect holy book be created as soon as possible. Why did it take three centuries for this to finally happen? It just seems a bit strange to me.
It is also important to realize that the canon of the Bible was decided after the Council of Nicaea caused Christianity’s level of truth to collapse, after the church had been corrupted by Rome. As a result, the people who decided the Bible’s canon were themselves corrupt (tests as true). So is it really that hard to believe that some of their choices might have been wrong?
Convincing Christians that there are parts of the Bible that need to be removed will be incredibly difficult, but I believe it is the only way for Christianity to move to the next level and live up to its true potential.
