Socialism has been one of the most disastrous philosophies ever devised. It promises Heaven on Earth, but whenever tried the end result has always been something closer to Hell. Instead of ultimate freedom, it inevitably brings tyranny. The fundamental flaw of socialism is that, by guaranteeing a wage for everyone, it destroys the incentives to produce and perform. It is simply human nature that people are not motivated to work for the “collective good” as they are for their own personal good.
Socialism also destroys human dignity because it prevents growth (personal, spiritual, and material). Growth is the key to happiness, yet socialism denies everyone the opportunity because it places limits on what one can achieve. And even if socialism could deliver on its promise of an easy life for all, it would still be destructive because we are not here to have it easy. Our purpose here is to grow and evolve which requires doing and experiencing difficult, often painful, things. For example, a life of poverty might be the best way to work through one’s negative karma. Socialism, if it was successful, would deny someone that opportunity. But the hard reality is that socialism results in massive poverty for everyone except the ruling class which always manages to retain its perks and privileges.
Christianity and socialism have always been at odds with one another, and the reason why is that socialism contradicts the fundamental tenets of the Christian faith.
We believe that heaven is where one goes in the afterlife if one is deserving. Socialists deny the existence of God and heaven (Karl Marx believed Christians have a false consciousness). They believe it is possible to create heaven on earth and to eliminate all suffering. This is a foolish notion, because this realm is in fact a purgatory, and thus pain and suffering are an unavoidable part of the human condition. This is something that we all must ultimately accept, but socialists refuse to do so.
They use envy to promote their ideology. We warn against envy (Thou shall not covet thy neighbor's house) because envy always leads to no good end (i.e. the income tax). While we believe in the importance of property rights, they do not. They believe it is acceptable to seize property. They believe it is acceptable to steal from others. We do not (Thou shall not steal). They try to justify stealing by saying it is being done for the people. But stealing can never be justified, no matter how noble the goal.
The battle between socialism and freedom seems destined to continue forever as long as there are those who deny God. Socialism is simply a rebellion against God. Sadly, the idea of socialism never dies. It just gets repackaged (i.e. environmentalism). Therefore, always beware of the wolf in sheep’s clothing. That might be the best description of socialism.
